INFANT SCHOOL TEACHERS
In this section I will give you ideas to do your work. If you need any specific help, please feel free to contact me and I will answer your questions or write some words about the topic.
TELLING STORIES
Telling stories is one of the most common activities in the kindergarten. When telling stories is used for teaching English, the aim is to develop listening skills. Children will learn new vocabulary, new structures, they will improve their pronunciation and, they will learn how to understand the story through the spoken language, the body language the teacher will use and the visual aids that could be the pictures from the actual book , a power point or figurines attached to a flannel board.
I am not going to give details about how to tell a story because you know how to do it. What you need are some ideas of the language to use “ around” the story telling.
Suggestions:
a) Select a story according to the topic you are working with the children. Read the book previously. If the language is very complex for the level of your children, write a summary of it with a couple of sentences for each page. Write it on a card so you can use it later.
b) Write the questions about the story that you will ask the children. These questions should be simple . One word answers should be accepted, yes/ no answers have to be included and alternative answers must be proposed.( “ Was the cat or the dog who ran away with the sausage? “). Accept answers in Spanish and after saying “ good answer” give the answer in English.
The story for the example is: The three bears ( or Goldilocks and the three bears ). You can use this story for the topic of “ The Family”, when teaching sizes ( big bear, middle size bear and little bear, ) or “animals of the woods”. In this case you will be using a book.
What you do | What you say | What students might say |
Show the cover of the book to the group | “ Look at this book . What do you think it is about? / Is it about cats, dogs, bears?“ Yes, it is about bears. | Osos/ bears… |
If “ Goldilocks “ is not in the front cover show the following pages of the book. | Who else is in the story? / Is there a girl or as boy in the story? Correct! There is a girl in the story and her name is “ Goldilocks”….. What’s her name? Good! Her name is “Goldilocks” and the name of the story is “ Goldilocks and the three bears.” Listen to the story… | Una niña/ a girl.. “Goldilocks" |
Ask some questions about the story. The first time, you can show the book or pictures to help the children with the answers. Remember to ask questions with yes/no answers if it is too difficult for your group. | -What´s the girls name? - How many bears are there in the story? - Where did Goldilocks go for a walk? - Who was the big bear? ( The same with middle size bear and little bear ) - Were the bears eating apples or soup? - Were the bears at home when Goldilocks came into the house? | Goldilocks. Tres/ Three Al bosque / To the woods/ to the forest. El papá/ father Sopa/ soup |
Remember the magic words for children: Good answer, good guess ( when they are near the correct answer), good, near-near, excellent, good work, well done, great!
